Description

Born in Aleppo, Misak Kochunian studied at the Kyurin National School and the Cilician School of Aintab. In 1886, he settled in Constantinople (Istanbul). He contributed to several prominent periodicals, including Hayrenik, Nor Dar, and Arevelyan Mamul. Between 1881 and 1886, he moved frequently, living in Constantinople, Yozgat, Aleppo, Kilis, and Aintab, before permanently settling in the Ottoman capital. In Constantinople, he opened a school named Hetumyan in Gamkabu, which unfortunately lasted only two years. His first creative work was the unpublished play The Bankrupt, followed by a correspondence sent from Caesarea to Melikyan's Hayrenik. In 1891, Misak became the editor-publisher of the Manzume-i Efkar, an Armenian-Turkish newspaper printed in Armenian script. From 1894 onward, he worked at the Sabah newspaper and, in 1908, co-founded the Jamanak newspaper with his brother, Sarkis Kochunyan. Through the pages of Manzume and Jamanak, he published novels and stories about life in Constantinople and a modern Armenian translation of Grigor Narekatsi's Book of Lamentations. His literary works include: Heavenly Scenes of Life (1897) The Mysterious Girl (Constantinople, 1907) Karapet (Constantinople, 1910) From 1887, Misak regularly contributed to Nor Dar under the pseudonym Anushavan, and later to the Arevelyan Mamul of Smyrna, portraying the lives of Armenians in Constantinople and other places he visited. Between 1901 and 1908, he edited Manzume-i Efkar under the pseudonym Kasim. In 1908, he established Jamanak with his brother Sarkis. Misak Kochunyan passed away in Constantinople in 1913. His funeral was held at the Mother Church, presided over by former Patriarch Malachia Ormanian.
