Name/Title
Rug/Pillow Cover from Zara (early-1900s)Description
The weaving style of carpets produced in the Sivas province of Central Anatolia is characterized by a corrugated knot technique. However, in Zara, a village within the same province predominantly inhabited by Armenians, the carpets feature a distinct flat knot technique, a hallmark of Armenian weaving. This difference sets Zara carpets apart from other Sivas carpets. Experts familiar with older Zara carpets recognize their Armenian origins due to this unique weaving style.
Traditionally, these carpets were repurposed as pillows, with fabric sewn on the back and wool filling inside. If used for sitting, the pillow would be filled with wool, while pillows intended for back support were typically filled with reed. In this context, carpets of this size are commonly referred to as “pillows.”Ethnography
