Nevart Shaghoian, later Nevart Levon Jivelekian, was born in Van, Western Armenia in 1894 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1920. By 1922, she had petitioned for naturalization in Boston. She lived in Malden, MA in 1927 and later moved to Watertown with her husband Levon, an automobile dealer, and their two sons. Throughout the 1920s and ’30s, she performed at venues like Symphony Hall and made regular radio appearances in Boston and California. By 1935, she relocated to San Francisco, becoming the choral director of the Armenian National Chorus and performing with the San Francisco Opera. She continued to appear on radio and recorded at least two albums in California. Nevarthe passed away in San Francisco in June 1973, leaving behind a recording that showcases her early talent and connection to composer Grikor Suni.Audio Format
