Description

The religious, moral, historical, literary, and cultural magazine Şoğagat began publication in Istanbul in 1952. The magazine’s first official owner was Chief Priest Sahak Papazyan, and the editor-in-chief was Chief Priest Karekin Kazancıyan, who later became the Armenian Patriarch of Turkey. In 1953, the official ownership transferred to the Holy Cross Tıbrevank School Foundation, and the magazine was renamed as Şoğagat, becoming the official religious, ethical, and literary publication of Holy Cross Tıbrevank. From 1959 to 1961, a special 525-page issue was published in honor of the 100th anniversary of Patriarch Yeghishe Tourian’s birth. In 1962, Ardaşes Nışanyan took over as editor-in-chief, and in 1968, Şoğagat began to be published annually. In 1977, the magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary, and on this occasion, Kevork Pamukcuyan published a list of books printed in Istanbul from 1923 to 1977. From 1978 onward, commemorative booklets were published under the name Şoğagat Series for various occasions. Between 1988 and 1991, the magazine's publication was paused. Following the appointment of Patriarch Karekin II (Kazancıyan), efforts began in 1991 to revive Şoğagat, with three issues published under the official ownership of the Patriarchate. In 1995, publication efforts resumed with a new editorial board, including Baruyr Muratyan, Kevork Pamukcuyan, and Vağarşag Seropyan. Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan (the current Armenian Patriarch of Turkey) became the responsible director, and Father Krikor Damadyan was appointed editor-in-chief. In 1995, Şoğagat resumed publication with a focus on scientific historical research, alongside the release of works from the Şoğagat Series.
