In 1917-1918 Shah-Mouradian made sixteen recordings with Columbia Records in New York. Many of them were from the same repertoire as his earlier discs. These recordings became incredibly popular in the United States; practically every Armenian family who owned a phonograph in the 1920s had at least one of them, if not several. Writers like William Saroyan and David Kherdian remembered their parents’ generation playing these records as a hallmark of their childhood. “Hayastan”, a composition of Kapriel Yeranian, is listed as an arrangement of Gomidas. The lyrics were written by Hovhannes Mirza-Vanandetsi and describe Armenia in Biblical terms as the location of the Garden of Eden and the cradle of the human race. This song was pointed out by scholars during the controversy over “Mer Hayrenik” as the prime candidate for an alternative Armenian National Anthem. Pietro Bianchini (1828–1905), described by an anonymous Armenian writer as «իտալացի կտրիճ երաժիշտ… Պ. Պետրոս Պիանքինի» (“an heroic Italian musician, Mr. Peter Bianchini”), was a Venetian violinist, composer, conductor, and educator. Though not widely recognized today, Bianchini is the composer of a song that has become a cornerstone of Armenian diasporan culture: «Բա՜մ. փորոտան». Generations of Armenian schoolchildren have sung this celebrated piece without knowing its origins. The song is a musical setting of a poem by Fr. Łewond Ališan (1820–1901), a Mekhitarist monk, botanist, historian, and poet, who was nearly contemporaneous with Bianchini. The poem, titled «Երգ ու գնացք զօրացն հայոց ընդ Վահանայ Մամիկոնենոյ ի Շաւարշական դաշտին վրէժք» (“Song and March of the Armenian Soldiers Under Vahan Mamikonian in the Field of Shavarshakan for Vengeance”), was published in 1850 in San Lazzaro, Venice. It is a rallying anthem that evokes the spirit of Armenian soldiers under Vahan Mamikonian, determined to avenge the defeat of Vardan Mamikonian in the historic Battle of Avarayr in 451. Bianchini’s composition masterfully captures the fervor and determination of Ališan’s poem, transforming it into a song that continues to resonate deeply within the Armenian diaspora. The phrase «Բա՜մ. փորոտան» can be translated as “Boom! They roar.” The first word, «Բամ», is an onomatopoeic exclamation akin to “Boom!” in English. The second word, «փորոտան», derives from the rare verb փորոտալ, meaning “to roar” or “to blow mightily,” evoking a deep, powerful sound similar to a lion’s roar. Misinterpretation of the title as «Բամբորոտան» has arisen due to the obscurity of the verb փորոտալ and the association of «բամբ» (a term for “bass” favored by Komitas) with deep, resonant sounds. However, փորոտալ is linked to փոր (“belly” or “abdomen”) and suggests diaphragmatic power, as with skilled singers or brass players. This etymological nuance enhances the song’s imagery of a resonant and mighty roar.
