Copper Tray With Lid (Garabed Arslanyan)Description
Lidded copper tray made by Garabed Arslanyan of Aintab, bearing the initials Ն.Ա. Garabed was likely a son or relative of Hagop Arslanian, who worked in the Nazar Ağa Han. The Arslanian family originally hailed from Tokat and became one of Aintab’s most prominent Armenian metalworking dynasties.
The sons of Arslan Garabed of the Arslanian family were renowned coppersmiths and silversmiths in Aintab, known not only for their craftsmanship but also for engraving and decorative carving. Among the most celebrated were the “Boys of Babashah”—Nerses, Adour, and Hovhannes—who produced kitchenware, decorative vessels, lamps, and gilded ornaments for Bibles. According to Kevork H. Barsoumian, four generations of the family practiced the copper trade: Aslan Baba, Karnu Beoyuk (“Big” Beoyuk), Baba Shah, and Jhoud Aslan, continuing their craft and commerce in Aleppo after leaving Aintab.Category
