Description

Artaki Candan (1885–30 January 1948), born Artaki Terziyan in Selanik (Salonica) was a Turkish classical music composer, songwriter, and master kanun player of Armenian origin. His father, Azerik, was a barber, and his family initially intended for him to pursue a medical career. After completing his secondary education, he moved to Istanbul to study medicine, attending medical school for two years before abandoning his studies to focus on music, which he had loved from a young age. Candan received musical training from the renowned Selanikli Ahmed Bey, who introduced him to the intricacies of Turkish classical music and served as both mentor and protector during Artaki’s formative years. Initially living in poverty, he eventually mastered the kanun under Ahmed Bey’s guidance, performing alongside him before returning to Istanbul. There, he began working at the Eldorado venue near Taksim, alongside other notable musicians such as the kemenche player Aleko and Mısırlı İbrahim Efendi. He later performed at various other Istanbul venues, establishing himself as a highly skilled and confident musician. Known for his elegance, expressive playing, and disdain for poor technique or “market-style” performances, Candan mentored younger musicians and encouraged refinement and musical expression. Due to his gentle and principled character, he adopted the surname “Candan” in place of his birth name Terziyan. Candan had a long career in the Istanbul music scene, including a tenure with the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory’s performance ensemble. During World War I, he joined the record company Sahibinin Sesi, initially as a performing musician and later as its director, a position he held until his death. He also worked as a conductor for His Master’s Voice, facilitating the recording of many of his compositions. He composed around fifty pieces in the song style, with notable works including “Ay Dalgalanırken Suların Oynak İzinde”, “Bu Gece Çamlarda Kalsak Ne Olur”, “Cismin Gibi Rûhun da Güzel Zannedip Ey Mâh”, “Koklasam Saçlarını Bu Gece Tâ Fecre Kadar”, and “Rûhumda Bahar Açtı Onun Bülbülü Sendin”. His earliest works include “Bugün Dil-i Divaneden…” in the Nihavend makam and “Parlıyor Cismim Gibi.” Artaki Candan died of bladder cancer on 30 January 1948. His funeral was attended by a large gathering of fellow musicians, and he was buried in the Şişli Armenian Cemetery. In accordance with his wishes, a peşrev in the Bayati makam from his later compositions was performed at his grave on the fortieth day after his death. Among his most notable students was Fikret Kutluğ, who carried on his musical legacy.
