During the 1895 massacres, he served as a doctor in Urfa, treating many wounded Armenians. Arrested during the April 24, 1915 roundup of Armenian intellectuals and sent to Ayash, he was released on July 23, 1915. After sending his family to Bulgaria, he served as a captain in the Ottoman army’s Gülhane Hospital during the Gallipoli campaign and later immigrated to the United States. In 1940, he published his autobiography, A Man Who Found a Country, recounting his life from Ottoman Turkey to America.
