Description

Joseph the Beautiful (1872) written by playwright Tovmas Terzian. The play is about Joseph who's adorned with honors in his palace but he is saddened in memory of his father. His brothers, hungry, come to Egypt seeking food because of famine, among them also Simon. Joseph, tormented by pangs of conscience, tests his brothers with questions and trials. As the brothers approach, Joseph recognizes them, but doesn't want to reveal himself. He speaks to them harshly and accuses them of being spies and tests their sincerity. He questions them about their family, and they explain that they have a younger brother and an old, sorrowful father. Though his heart is moved, Joseph maintains his disguise and instructs them to bring their youngest brother to prove they are truthful. Upon returning home, they tell their father about the encounter, and he becomes distressed, fearing for the life of his youngest son. But eventually, driven by hunger, they return to Egypt with Benjamin. Joseph, overwhelmed with emotion, struggles to hide his joy and sorrow. Finally, he reveals his true identity as their long-lost brother. The brothers are astonished and embrace him tearfully. Joseph forgives them, and they rejoice together. He assures them that God’s hand was at work through all these events. Joseph then sends them back with gifts for their father and prepares for their reunion in Egypt.
