Description

Grammar of the Armenian Language, written by Mikayel Chamchian (1738–1823), a Mekhitarist monk, historian, grammarian, and theologian, was one of the most influential works of its kind. Chamchian is also renowned for his three-volume History of Armenia, based on ancient sources. In 1779, he published Kerakanutiun Haykazian Lezvi (Քերականութիւն Հայկազեան լեզուի, Grammar of the Armenian Language), which was considered the most authoritative Classical Armenian grammar textbook for nearly a century and was widely used in Armenian schools. It was the first grammar to reject Latin models and instead base its system on a careful study of Classical Armenian texts dating from the 5th to the 13th centuries. Chamchian abridged the work in 1801, and this version became the standard textbook in Armenian schools throughout the 19th century, with at least eleven reprintings.
