About Vardan and the Armenian War is the primary work of the 5th-century Armenian historian and theologian Yeghishe. It is dedicated to the Armenian rebellion against the Sasanian Empire, which took place between 449 and 451. This text is a significant historical and literary monument, providing invaluable insights into the history of Greater Armenia and its neighboring regions. The work centers on the history of the Vardanian family and their role in the conflict. Yeghishe, the author, was a student of the renowned scholars Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partev. Born in the early 410s, he wrote his History in the 460s. Yeghishe’s narrative is distinguished by its rich language, vivid imagery, and profound wisdom. His writing conveys a deep sense of patriotism and national pride, which is why his work has been regarded as both a heroic and epic poem.
The work has been republished numerous times, with this particular edition issued by the St. James Armenian Printing House in Jerusalem in 1865. This publication coincided with the arrival of Patriarch Yesayi on April 5, 1865, who immediately focused his efforts on advancing the scientific and educational activities of the convent. One of his first initiatives was the renovation of the Printing House's facilities, and this book was among the first to be published under his leadership.Ethnography
