Seal Stamp (Djebedjian)Description
The Djebedjian (also spelled Jebejian) family from Aintab (present-day Gaziantep, Turkey) was a prominent Armenian family of Apostolic faith, with some members also embracing Evangelical Christianity. Known for their contributions to education, commerce, and community leadership, the Djebedjian family played a significant role in the cultural and economic life of the region. When a company adds "and Sons" to its name, it typically signifies that the business is a family-run operation and that the owner's sons (or possibly male descendants) are involved in the business. It is known that Hagop had 5 children Avedis Garouj Artin Rahel Deyirmenjian and Armenag. Hagop was known as Haji Ammi.
One notable family member, Araxie (Araxi) Jebejian, born in 1880, was a dedicated educator and missionary. She attended the Haiganoushian Armenian School in Aintab, the Girls’ American Seminary of Aintab, and the Girls’ American College of Marash. In 1912, she studied at Woodbrooke Theological College in Birmingham, England, before returning to Aintab in 1914. During the Armenian Genocide, Araxie was deported to Der Zor, where she provided aid to fellow Armenians. Tragically, she was martyred in 1916 by Zeki Bey, the local governor, after refusing to convert to Islam and marry him.
Another distinguished family member, Dr. Avedis Jebejian, also born in Aintab, earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1902. Following the genocide, he played a crucial role in organizing and supporting the Armenian community in Aleppo, Syria.
The Djebedjian family also contributed to the local economy, particularly in the manufacturing of manisa, a type of fabric. Dikran Djebedjian’s father was a well-known trader in the industry, expanding his business to Diyarbakir (Dikranagerd) and opening an office there in 1912.
Photographs from the era highlight the family’s prominence, featuring members such as Hovhannes Agha Jebejian, his wife Mennoush Hanum, and their children Roza, Krikor, Avedis, Nejib, and Salihe.Inscription/Signature/Marks
