Khachatur Mekhaki Avetisyan (14 April 1926-1996) was a composer and authority on Armenian folk music, particularly the kanun. He graduated from Yerevan State Musical Conservatory and won gold medals in international competitions by age 25. In 1954, he composed the first Concerto for Kanun and Symphony Orchestra. Avetisyan founded the folk music department at the Komitas Conservatory in 1978, training a generation of musicians. He also served as artistic director of the Armenian National Dance Ensemble and the Tatul Altunyan Ensemble, contributing significantly to Armenian music.
