Name/Title
Edward Bogosian, Jahil Yem/Garkevil GouzemDescription
Also known as Yetvart Bogosian, Edward Bogosian was born in 1900 in Rodosto, Turkey, into a theatrical family; his father, Nazaret, was a professional actor and teacher. By his late teens, Yetvart was performing in Armenian theaters in Constantinople, showcasing his skills as an improviser and playwright. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1921, settling in New York City, where he began performing as Edward Bogosian throughout the Northeast. By March 1923, he had founded his own theater company, presenting a diverse repertoire of classic and original comedies.
Leveraging his theatrical background, Bogosian transitioned to recording in the late 1920s and continued into the 1940s, infusing his songs with the energy of his live performances. His humor reflected the harsh social and political realities he faced, having lived through the Adana massacres, the 1915 Genocide, WWI, the rise of racist and anti-immigrant groups, the Great Depression, and WWII. He ultimately died on 5 January 1977 in Queens, New York. He had a prolific career spanning the years from 1927 to 1975 and was associated with Pharos Records, Metropolitan Records, Balkan Records.Audio Format
