Oshin Silver (Cilician Armenia)

Name/Title

Oshin Silver (Cilician Armenia)

Description

Cilician Armenia. Oshin, 1308-1320 AD. Silver takvorin. Oshin (1282 – July 20, 1320) was king of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia from 1307 to 1320. A member of the House of Lampron, he became king after the murder of his nephew Leo III and brother Hethum II by the Mongol general Bilarghu. Supported by the Ilkhan Oljeitu, who had Bilarghu executed, Oshin ascended to the throne, defeated the Mongols, and sought aid from Christian Europe to defend against the Mamluks. Like his brother, he promoted a union of the Armenian and Roman churches, despite popular discontent. In 1309, he executed his wife’s uncle for his brother's murder, and briefly held Henry II of Cyprus after his sister’s husband Amalric usurped the Cypriot throne.
