Carpet Lori-Pambak (1894)Description
An 1894 inscribed Armenian long rug, originating from Lori-Pambak region, features four prominent stepped medallions across a deep red field framed by a rosette border with running dog guard bands. The top border retains a prominent black cartouche bearing a three-line Armenian inscription dated 1894. Constructed with hand-knotted wool pile on a wool foundation, the piece displays natural madder and indigo dyes characteristic of late 19th-century Caucasian village weaving traditions. The pattern and colors, according to Arto Tavukciyan, is very Karabakh in design. The weaving, however, is very much Lori in its execution.
Inscription reads: 1894 թիւ Սեպտեմբերի 7ին այս վառնիս պատկանի Սալաթուն Իգհացի (Իգահատցի) Սալաթի Աղաճանեա(ն) Ղազիեա(ն)
The inscription mentions the name of the carpet (cloth) owner and commissioner, Salat Aghajanian Ghazian, originally from Ighat (Aygehad). Acharyan records Salat–Salatin as a female personal name. Var (վառ) refers specifically to a fabric, embroidered cloth, or banner, from which the term khachvar (խաչվառ), a processional cross banner, is derived. The date given is September 8, 1894, with September written in its dialectal form, Sektember. The same person commissioned more than one carpet, including another with a similar inscription, made in 1895 or 1896.
