Carpet Shushi (1 May/March 1915)Description
Carpet from Shushi, dated 1 May (or March) 1915
This carpet originates from Shushi. Multiple historical sources confirm the presence of the Simonents (Simonyants) family in the region, including references to the Simonents Bridge (see linked source). Textile specialists—among them Melania Balayan—have attributed the carpet more specifically to the Karintak area, where the Simonents Bridge is located.
The carpet was most likely woven as a wedding gift. At the lower register, pictorial motifs depict a bride on the right presenting objects to the groom on the left. The central field between the figures displays a subtly shifting pattern, symbolizing loyal attachment and union, with crosses incorporated into each compartment. Additionally, the repeating pattern that continues beyond the border evokes the concept of infinity, a traditional motif signifying enduring protection and continuity.Ethnography

Recently, an individual named Aram Hakobyan contacted me on Facebook, claiming that his family once bore the Simonyants surname and suggesting they might be descendants of this family. He also pointed out a striking coincidence between the name of the bridge (Hakob) and his great-grandfather, who shares the same name—possibly indicating a link to an even earlier ancestor, perhaps a great-great-great-grandfather.Created By
