Description

Minas Chaghatzbanian (1887, Malatia, Ottoman Empire – March 14, 1918, Fresno, California, USA), also known by his stage name Kemany Minas ("Minas the Violinist" in Turkish), was an Armenian violinist and singer. Born in the Ottoman Empire, Chaghatzbanian emigrated to the United States in July 1913. Upon his arrival, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he became a prominent figure in the local Armenian and immigrant music scene. In December 1916, Chaghatzbanian recorded 12 tracks for the Victor Talking Machine Company in New York City. On these recordings, he either performed as a vocalist or accompanied Karekin Proodian, a singer originally from Diyarbekir, on the violin. In November 1917, he recorded an additional 18 tracks for Columbia Records, also in New York City. In early 1918, Chaghatzbanian relocated to Fresno, California, in search of a healthier climate to aid his deteriorating health. He succumbed to lung disease, likely tuberculosis, shortly after his arrival. He had tuberculosis when singing the songs on this record.
