Shushanik Kurghinian (1876–1927) was an Armenian poet whose work is associated with early socialist and feminist currents in Armenian literature. She was born in Alexandropol (present-day Gyumri) in the Russian Empire and received her education there before continuing studies in Tiflis, an important cultural center for Armenians at the turn of the twentieth century. Kurghinian was influenced by Russian revolutionary thought and Marxist ideas, which shaped both the themes and tone of her poetry. Her writing often addresses social inequality, class struggle, the exploitation of labor, and the constrained position of women, frequently adopting a direct, unsentimental voice. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she foregrounded the experiences of working-class women and critiqued patriarchal norms within both society and the family. Kurghinian published several collections during her lifetime and contributed to periodicals connected to progressive and leftist circles. Although her work was not widely canonized in her lifetime, it has since been recognized as an important contribution to modern Armenian literature and as an early articulation of feminist and socially engaged poetry in the Armenian tradition.Inscription/Signature/Marks
