Description

Vahe Haig was born in 1896 in Kharpert. After graduating from the local parish school, he completed his studies at the Euphrates College in Kharpert. In 1915, he went to Constantinople. He began his literary career after World War I. In 1922, after working for a time in the Armenian press of Constantinople, he moved to Greece and then to the United States. He took courses in law, economics, and literature at Boston University. After graduating from the university, he worked for an insurance company. In later years, he settled in California. From 1922 to 1925, he served as the editor-in-chief of the "Nor Or" periodical. He contributed to the Armenian diaspora press, publishing stories and novellas, which he later compiled into five collections under the general title Հայրենի ծխան (Homeland Ashes; 1930–1970). He created a portrayal of the lost homeland, showing the alienating and demoralizing impact of foreign environments on the psychology of displaced Armenians and their struggle to preserve their national identity. He prepared a volume dedicated to the 1500th anniversary of the Vardanants War ("Fifteen Hundredth Anniversary of the Vardanants War: 451-1951," 1952). In 1972, he published the collection "Illuminated Faces of Our Time" in Beirut, containing portraits of various Armenian writers and artists. His most extensive work is "Kharpert and Its Golden Field: A Memorial Book of History, Culture, and Ethnography" (1959), a volume of 1,500 large, illustrated pages, which, with the contributions of dozens of people, presents the history, topography, ethnography, and intellectual life of Kharpert and its surrounding Armenian-populated villages. He also wrote "Monument to the Yozgat People," "History of the Fresno Armenian Community," "The Children's World of Armenia and Its Children's Literature" (1974), and other works.
