Khirimian Hayrig (1820–1907) was a prominent Armenian religious leader, intellectual, and national figure. Born in the village of Van, he became the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople in 1869 and later the Catholicos of All Armenians in 1892. Known for his compassionate leadership, he advocated for Armenian rights under Ottoman rule and worked to uplift Armenian communities through education, cultural development, and religious reform.
Hayrig is remembered for his powerful speeches and writings, including his famous address “The Paper Ladle” at the 1878 Berlin Congress, where he highlighted the plight of Armenians. He played a key role in the Armenian national awakening and remained a beloved figure, advocating for unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
The sponsor of the book, Badrig Gulbenkian (c. 1856–1930), was a rug importer and philanthropist who lived in the New York and New Jersey area for about forty years. Born in Talas, Gesaria (Kayseri), he was a member of the notable Gulbenkian family. After emigrating to the United States, he became president of the Gulbenkian Seamless Rug Company in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which specialized in importing and manufacturing oriental rugs, achieving considerable financial success. Beyond his business pursuits, Gulbenkian was actively involved in Armenian charities and supported the Near East Relief, aiding Armenians and other Near Eastern communities affected by World War I and the Armenian genocide. He lived at 203 Corlies Avenue, Pelham Heights, New York, until his death at age 72 in 1930.Book Details
