Description

Smbat Davtyan (May 23, 1858, Akn – October 1, 1926, Yerevan, Armenian SSR, TSFSR, USSR) was an Ottoman-Armenian educator, theater scholar, publisher, and editor. He studied at the National School of Akn and later at a French lyceum in Constantinople. Davtyan worked as a teacher in Constantinople and other Armenian-populated areas of Turkey and contributed to various periodicals, including Mamul, Masis, and Kavrosh. In Constantinople, he established an Armenian publishing house and from 1898 to 1900 served as the director and editor of the periodical Biurakn. During the Armenian Genocide in 1915, he relocated to Armenia, where he lived until his death in 1926. Smbat Davtyan authored and published numerous educational books including this one, "Mankakan Otanavorner" (Children’s Poems), in 1897. He also wrote a significant study on the history of Armenian theater, which was published in both Armenian and French. Throughout his career, Davtyan used several pseudonyms, including Artsvik, Tsvik, S. D., Sibaris, and Vaghinak. His contributions to education, literature, and the Armenian cultural legacy remain highly regarded.
