Jebntats Noratsune (Yervant Odian, 1920)Description
Ժեպընթաց նորածինը (The Express Newborn) is a satirical short story by Yervant Odian (1869–1926) that critiques the social and political atmosphere of the Ottoman Armenian community. The narrative centers on a newborn who enters the world possessing the mental maturity and cynical temperament of an adult. Bypassing infancy, the child immediately speaks, reads newspapers, and engages in the complex political debates characteristic of the era's intelligentsia.
Odian utilizes this absurd premise to lampoon the obsession with rapid modernization and the hyper-politicized nature of his peers. By depicting a baby consumed by the weariness and pretentiousness of coffee-house politics, the author suggests that the era's ideological fervor had reached a point where even the cradle was not exempt from national anxieties. The humor turns dark as the parents' initial awe at their child’s precocity fades, revealing that the infant has inherited only the worst traits of his elders: cynicism, verbosity, and a total lack of wonder.
The work's literary value lies in its use of hyperbole and irony to expose the gap between intellectual appearance and actual substance. Similar to Odian’s Comrade Panjuni series, this story remains a staple of Armenian literature for its sharp critique of human ego and the "know-it-all" archetype. It stands as a timeless commentary on how the pressure for progress and intellectual prestige can encroach upon natural development and genuine human connection.Book Details
