Scope and Content

From the inhabitants of the Armenian quarter of Taşbaşı in the district of Ordu, Çavdaroğlu, also known as Vartyan Mihran son of Agop, who had previously passed away His surviving minor male children (sağir oğulları) Papaket Agop and [name unclear in the text], and his minor female child (sağire kızı) Piruz, had no legal guardian (veli) or guardian appointed by the state (mecid/vasi) nor any representative (muhtar) to oversee and administer their affairs. Since it was necessary to settle and administer their property (tasfiye-i emval), protect their inheritance shares, pursue and manage matters relating to their rights and portions, and because a person was needed who was upright in every respect and capable of properly carrying out such duties and responsibilities, the certificate dated 20 May 1336 (1920) issued by the council of elders (heyet-i ihtiyariye) of the said quarter, together with the notifications and signatures of the persons whose names are written below and in the attached sections, was examined and deemed evident and valid. Accordingly, the mother of the aforementioned minors, known by the descriptions and identifications written below and residing in the said quarter, namely Ceğik daughter of Ohancan, daughter of Zor Oğlu (Zoryan?), was appointed and designated as the legal guardian (vasi) of the aforementioned minors until the time of their legal maturity (vakti rüşt) and competence. She accepted the said guardianship and undertook and committed herself to carrying out the necessary duties thereof. Therefore, upon request, this record was officially written and registered. Written on the 24th day of the blessed month of Ramadan, in the year 1338 AH / 1920 CE. Witnesses (Şühûdü’l-hâl): From the inhabitants of the aforementioned quarter: * Çıknavuryan Sayun son of Pedros * Likewise, Çakaryan Kalust son of Melkon _________________________________________________ Simple Summary This document officially appoints Ceğik bint Ohancan, the widow/mother of Mihran (Vartyan) Agop’s children, as the legal guardian (vasi) of her minor children after Mihran’s death in the Armenian quarter of Taşbaşı, Ordu. Because the children were underage and had inheritance/property matters to manage, the local neighborhood council and witnesses certified that she was a suitable and trustworthy person to oversee their affairs until they reached adulthood.
