Scope and Content

The reason for drawing up this document is as follows: In our company, the Aşuroğlu Deşik Kayrıkası Company, which we established on the basis of 146 shares, it was decided at the end of September [year unclear] to distribute one and a half liras for each share. I hereby acknowledge that I have received from Süleyman Efendi, and that it has been duly paid and receipted to me, the sum of twenty-eight liras only, arising from the company’s distribution. This signed document serves as my receipt. Signed by Mgrdich Karatekeyan.

“There were also those who came to Hereke so that their craftsmanship could be utilized. One such figure was Mıgırdıç Karatekeyan from Sivas. Mıgırdıç Usta came to Istanbul and presented two Sivaskari prayer rugs to the Sultan, for which he received 5,000 kuruş. He then brought his family with him and relocated to Hereke in order to produce prayer rugs and to teach factory workers how to weave carpets from wool or silk. He was paid 3,000 kuruş to cover his relocation expenses. Appearing for the first time in the wage registers in July 1893, Mıgırdıç Usta and his family received a total monthly salary of 3,600 kuruş.”
