Name, title, and residence of the lessee (tenant): (not filled in on the first page) Nationality: Ottoman State. Annual rent: Calculated at ten months’ rent. Monthly rent: — (left blank) Currency of rent: Ottoman lira (Lirâ-yı Osmânî). Method of payment: Payment in cash is stipulated. Term of lease: Nine months. Lease period: From the 20th day of the month of Rebiülevvel 1334 AH until the end of Zilhicce 1334 AH. Purpose for which the property will be used: For commercial property/business use (emvâl-i ticâriyye). Inventory declaration: Declaration of all fixtures, equipment, and furnishings delivered with the leased property. 18 Kânûn-ı Sânî 1331 Rumi 25 Rebiülevvel 1334 Hijri (31 January 1916 Gregorian) Lessor (landlord): Şahinzâde Mehmed Ferid Efendi Seal/signature: “Mehmed Ferid” Lessee (tenant): Oduncu Ahmed … Possibly followed by another name/title, perhaps Rıdvânî Mehmed Efendi or similar; the handwriting is difficult to decipher. On its face, this rental contract contains no explicit reference to Armenians. However, the Taşhan commercial complex in Sivas was historically dominated by Armenian merchants (Example: Ottoman Armenian Document #21), particularly members of the Şahinyan family. What makes this document noteworthy is that it records Muslim Turkish individuals owning and leasing property within Taşhan only months after the Armenian Genocide began—a period during which Armenian-owned businesses and real estate were being systematically confiscated, transferred, or otherwise removed from their original owners.
