Description

Little is known about the life and career of the Constantinople-based photographer Hekimian, whose studio was located in Pera, across from the Palais de France. Based on the few surviving examples of his work, it appears that his studio operated from the mid-1860s through the 1870s, making him one of the earliest photographers active in the city. Like most of his contemporaries, Hekimian specialized in studio portraiture, and no works in other genres are known to have survived. His sitters were primarily men from Istanbul’s middle classes. Hekimian’s practice favored simplicity and efficiency, offering clients straightforward carte de visite portraits intended mainly for business or personal use. The relatively small number of surviving photographs suggests that his career in the highly competitive field of photography was brief, and that his studio had likely closed by the late 1870s.
