Diruhi Hanım Papazyan (born 1858) was a member of the prominent Papazyan family of Constantinople. She was the daughter of Hovhannes Papazyan and married Diran Dadian, the son of Artin Pasha Dadian, in 1884 at the age of twenty-six, thereby linking two of the most influential Ottoman Armenian families. Diruhi belonged to a family closely associated with the Emniyet Sandığı (Security Fund), one of the Ottoman Empire’s earliest public savings and credit institutions. Founded on 19 June 1868 through the initiative of Midhat Pasha, the institution was established to provide affordable loans against pledged property, protecting people of limited means from usurious moneylenders. Its first director was Mıgırdiç Efendi Papazyan, while her father, Hovhannes Papazyan, was among the institution’s founders and earliest financial supporters. Although Diruhi was only about ten years old when the Emniyet Sandığı was established and was therefore not one of its original founders, she later became one of its contributors. Contemporary accounts list Diruhi Hanım Papazyan among the institution’s depositors and benefactors, reflecting both her family’s long-standing involvement with the Fund and her own participation in its philanthropic mission. Her association with the Emniyet Sandığı, together with her marriage into the Dadian family, illustrates the role played by elite Ottoman Armenian women in charitable, financial, and communal affairs during the late nineteenth century.Photograph Details
