Postcard #82Description
In this condition I arrived here from Tokat. The community of Amisos (Samsun) received and cared for me as was fitting. A few days ago I wrote to Your Eminence, asking that you kindly take care on my behalf. I await a favorable reply.
Kissing your right hand,
Amisos, 19 October 1918
The most humble servant of Your Eminence, which I venerate,

_______________________________________________
In 1913, Chrysanthos became the Metropolitan of Trebizond. The events of the First World War profoundly affected his life. In April 1916, shortly before the Russian invasion, the local Ottoman administration handed him control of the city. The Russians retained him as governor, despite his efforts to help the local Turkish population return to Trebizond and re-establish their institutions, much to the dismay of some Russian authorities. During the war, he increasingly advocated for an independent Pontus that would protect the region’s different ethnic communities. At the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, he proposed the creation of a Republic of Pontus. For this, he was condemned to death by Turkish nationalist forces in 1920 and was unable to return to his post in Trebizond.Postcard Details
