Written on a fragment of the original photo caption: “A group of Armenian legionnaires during lunch in Marash. The ones marked with crosses were killed in battle.” Written on the backside: Dear Arshavir, I gave this photograph as a keepsake in memory of those brave men who fell in Marash. Their graves remained [unmarked/unknown], [but] their names were engraved in our hearts, and it is impossible for their memory to [fade/be forgotten]. Those among them who bore the sign of the cross were martyred. G. S. ? J. ? 3/5/1920
