N. G. Markarian was the brother of the well-known Bulgarian-Armenian photographer Vram Markarian. Following in his brother’s footsteps, he left his hometown of Caesarea (Kayseri) and settled in Shumen, Bulgaria. In the mid-1890s, the brothers established the Markarian Brothers photographic studio, which operated under that name until the early 1900s. The success of the business encouraged them to open a branch studio in Silistra. Within a few years, the branch became an independent enterprise under the name N. G. Markarian. It remained the city’s leading photographic establishment well into the 1920s. Like his brother, N. G. Markarian was an active cultural figure within the Bulgarian-Armenian community at the turn of the twentieth century. As a photographer, however, his work appears to have been largely confined to conventional studio portraiture, and no photographs by him in other genres are known to have survived.Subject Place
