Sonia Karakach (née Papazian) was born in Kharpert (Harput) in 1921. During her youth, her family relocated to Cilicia during the period of French administration, and she later settled in Constantinople, where she became involved in the city’s Armenian musical and performance circles. There she met Hrant Karakachian, a musician and kanon player, whom she later married. The couple performed together for a period within the Armenian community of Constantinople before emigrating to France and establishing themselves in Marseille. Active within the French-Armenian cultural scene, Karakach became known as a singer and dancer through stage appearances and musical performances. She remained based in Marseille for most of her life and continued to be associated with the city’s Armenian cultural life until her death.Audio Format
