Description

Dikran Chökürian (Western Armenian: Տիգրան Չէօկիւրեան; 1884 – 1915) was an Armenian writer, teacher, editor, and intellectual of the late Ottoman period. Born in Gümüşhane in the Ottoman Empire in 1884, he became known for his literary contributions and his role in Armenian cultural life prior to his death during the Armenian Genocide. Chökürian graduated from the Berberian College in Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1907 and subsequently worked as a teacher in Armenian schools, contributing to Armenian education and letters. In 1910 he published a collection of short stories, Voices from the Homeland (Hayreni Dzayner), which helped establish his reputation as a writer. In 1914 Chökürian published his most significant work, the novel The Monastery (Vank). The book is dedicated to the themes of civilization and freedom, and it reflects his engagement with both literary and cultural concerns of his time. The Monastery is considered his major contribution to Armenian literature, illustrating his literary style and his commitment to exploring broad human and social themes through fiction. Chökürian also served as editor of the Armenian journal Vostan (Ոստան, “The Capital City”), contributing to the intellectual and public discourse of the Armenian community. In April 1915, during the early stages of the Armenian Genocide, he was among the Armenian intellectuals arrested in Constantinople and subsequently killed in Ayaş, near Ankara. His death at age 31 cut short a promising literary and cultural career. The Monastery (Vanke) remains an important work in the study of early 20th‑century Armenian literature. It is valued both for its thematic engagement with the concepts of cultural identity and freedom and as one of the last major works produced by an Armenian intellectual in the Ottoman Empire before the genocide. Chökürian is remembered as part of the generation of Armenian writers and educators whose lives and work were disrupted by the events of 1915. His literary output, particularly The Monastery, is preserved as a testament to his artistic vision and to the broader cultural currents within Armenian literature on the eve of the genocide.
