Mihran Tabakian (1878–1915) was a distinguished Armenian educator, writer, and intellectual whose career was defined by his commitment to the cultural and academic advancement of the Armenian community within the Ottoman Empire. Born in Adapazar, he began his intellectual journey at the Armash Seminary, a prestigious institution often referred to as a "monastic university" and a vital center for Armenian clerical and secular leadership. Upon completing his studies, Tabakian moved to Istanbul, where he established himself as a central figure in the Armenian educational system. He served with distinction as the director of prominent Armenian schools in the Ortaköy and Balat districts, where he was noted for his pedagogical rigor and administrative leadership.
Beyond his work in the classroom, Tabakian was a prolific contributor to the Armenian press and literary world. He played an active role in shaping intellectual discourse through his writing, most notably through his involvement with the Revue de la littérature arménienne et mondiale (Review of Armenian and World Literature) and his publication titled Trésors (Treasures). His work often reflected a deep engagement with both traditional Armenian heritage and contemporary world literature. Politically, he was an active member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun), aligning himself with the movement for Armenian civil rights and social reform during the late Ottoman period.
The trajectory of Tabakian’s life was tragically cut short during the systematic targeting of Armenian intellectuals in 1915. He was among the community leaders arrested in Istanbul on April 24, 1915, a date that marks the onset of the Armenian Genocide. Following his arrest, he was deported to Çankırı as part of the initial wave of intellectual exiles. In August 1915, while being transferred under guard, he was killed near Yozgat.Book Details
