The US Army's "A Short Guide to Syria" (first published in 1943) served as a vital WWII reference. It provided troops with cultural context, geography, and survival tips for the region.
A pocket-sized primer for Allied forces stationed or passing through, it broke down the local terrain, culture, and etiquette into easily digestible facts:
The Geography & Cities
The Coast: Featured vibrant cities like Beirut (now Lebanon) and Latakia, characterized by Mediterranean climates, agriculture, and busy ports.
The Interior: Dominated by the capital, Damascus, and Homs. Damascus was famously known as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.
The Desert: A vast, arid landscape inhabited primarily by nomadic Bedouin tribesmen.
Culture & Etiquette
Respectful Greetings: Troops were advised to use the traditional greeting Salam alaykum (Peace be upon you) and reciprocate with Wa-alaykum as-salam (And unto you, peace).Modesty: Modest attire and conservative behavior were highly emphasized, especially when visiting religious sites.
Hospitality: The manual highlighted that Syrians are exceptionally hospitable. Turning down coffee or food offered by a host was considered incredibly rude.
Dealing with Bedouins
Troops operating near the desert were taught that the Bedouin relied on coffee, sugar, and tobacco. Hospitality rules applied strictly: if a guest arrived, a sheep was typically killed to prepare a bountiful feast of mutton, curds, and bread.
Common Words & PhrasesThe guidebook included a phonetic dictionary for daily necessities, such as:"Good morning": Sabah al-khayr"Thank you": Shukran"How much?": Bikam?"Water": MayyCataloged By
