2023.6.1Description
In 1951 the Ford Motor Company was given a contract to develop a Military Utility Tactical Truck (MUTT) to replace the WWII era Jeep and its descendant the M38, the M151 was the result.
Initially built by Ford and later by Kaiser and the AM General Corporation over 10,000 units would be built before production ceased. The M151 MUTT became the principal combat Jeep of the Vietnam era and served from 1960 through the early 1990’s, making it the longest lasting “jeep” variant used by the US Armed Forces
Based on the M151 platform, the M718 ¼ ton, 4x4, frontline ambulance could carry ambulatory and litter patients. The cargo area of the M718 vehicles is longer and higher than the base M151 to accommodate the litters and patients.
Michigan Connection
The M151 were assembled by Ford in Highland Park & Livonia and the contracts were administrated by US Army Tank Automotive Command in Warren.
