Has an Acme Thunderer whistle on chain in breast pocket. M-1917 Wool Tunic Sgt. Oscar Grunow B Battery, 330th Field Artillery Eighty-fifth Division WWI Popularly known as the "Custer Division" The 85th Division was organized at Camp Custer, Michigan in October 1917 and was made up of men drafted from Michigan and Wisconsin. First units embarked for overseas on July 21, 1918, and the last units arrived in France on Aug. 12, 1918. This uniform was worn by Sgt Oscar Grunow of Detroit. The chain going from the buttonhole to the breast pocket holds an Acme Thunderer Whistle. Sgt Grunow would have used this to give commands to his gun crew over the sound of the firing. The single overseas chevron on the left cuff indicates six months of overseas duty, the red chevron tells us he was honorably discharged from service.
