St. Clair Rubber Childs Toy Helmet

Name/Title

St. Clair Rubber Childs Toy Helmet

Entry/Object ID

2017.1.53

Description

Once the Micarta division of Westinghouse developed the high-pressure liner, the Army declared the low pressure models non-combat serviceable. St. Clair Mfg. found themselves sitting on a large number of unfinished liners with no more government need. In true Yankee spirit, many of these liners were fitted with basic suspensions and were sold as children’s toys. The example we have here was cut down, giving it more of a jockey helmet shape and fitted with a card paper sweatband and a cotton chinstrap.
