Flat Rimed Drive wheel

Name/Title

Drive Wheel

Description

Wooden wheel on the outside of the Grist Mill attached to a drive shaft inside of the mill. The shaft and wheel were driven by the water wheel.

Use

A flat belt ran on the outside of the wheels flat surface and turned gearing to press apples into apple cider. This belt drive would always slip when pressing apples. Mr. Colins replaced this with a sprocket chain drive wheel. This also worked well for running other machinery used in the mill to support his livelihood.
