Description

Photograph of 62 Western Drive. Hartshorn house #25. Built ca. 1884 in Shingle style with gable roof; exterior finish is stone and wood shingles. Notes arched and square windows with sunburst decoration. The house is called the "Goodsell house" as it seemed to have been bought and sold to and from the Goodsell family several times during the '30s, even back and forth on the same day. Charles H. Goodsell was a banker, who moved to Western Drive in Short Hills around 1923. The house was sold to H. Hamilton Weber sometime between April 1933 and June 1 1934, when the house was repurchased by The Goodsells. One suspects some kind of maneuvering for tax purposes or other financial reasons as this was depression time. The Goodsells appear to have left the area at the end of 1940. In October 1953, the house was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Neibling. The house was listed for sale in November 1973. Mr. and Mrs. James O'Daniel were living in the house by April 1974. Many changes have been made inside although many architectural details remain. Much of the renovation was made by the Nieblings. The circular flow pattern of the downstairs is characteristic of other Hartshorn houses.
