Founded by Bill Gruning in 1910, Gruning's Ice Cream Parlor was a family-owned chain of establishments that served ice cream, chocolates and meals. The location at 59 South Orange Ave., South Orange, opened in 1929 grew in popularity through the 1950s, and was expanded to include shops in Montclair, Caldwell, Plainfield, Millburn and Newark. The Millburn branch of Grunings opened in the mid 1950s at 780 Morris Turnpike. On April 3, 1986, the Millburn location was demolished to make way for a 3 -story office building, thus ending Gruning's presence in Millburn. The ice cream continued to be sold in grocery stores, including Kings. The button promotes Gruning's products which also included candy and hot fudge available at local supermarkets.
