Harvey S. Smith House, "The Hessian House," 155 Millburn Avenue

Description

The Hessian House, restored and owned by Harvey Kahn (c. 1957). House was constructed shortly after 1740 from a design in the Carpenter's Handbook. Legend has it that two Hessian soldiers deserted during the Battle of Springfield on June 23, 1790 and hid in the attic. They were the Van Wert Brothers and are reputed to be the descendants of the Van Wests in this area.
