2014.040.001Scope and Content
Postally used 1954(?) cancelled envelope, with letter inside, sent from the Pitcairn Islands (or a ship that was stopped there) to Mrs. Wm. C. Ridgway (Emily) at 250 Hartshorn Drive in Short Hills. The handwritten letter inside is on blue paper and says: "Feb. 9, 1954(?); Dear Emily, They tell me these stamps have more value when cancelled -- that is if they ever arrive!! Enjoyed your letter and puzzles. Many thanks. The natives are aboard (only 200 on the isle) selling their wares. Mostly baskets, chains, & beads & carved canes & flying fish. Each has the carvers own signature. The natives are a much higher class than those of the Easter Isles. We are seeing plenty of sea! 8 days from here to Figi. It will be 15 days since we have put a foot on terra firma! Pops is fine, his cold totally gone. Tonight a C.T. party given by Allen Sca??s. In fact a C.T. party every d_____night. A Mr. & Mrs. Miller aboard; she was Flora Whitney, Rod Tower's 1st. Guess you (sic) rather told you our 1st 18 hr. out was a horror. Waves black & tall as Mt. Everest. Hate not getting any home news. Also miss the daily papers. Best to Bill & the young(?). Affec. Helen"
