Description

Two-page hand-written letter from Florence (Agnes) McCaskie, who was on active service with the U.S. A.E. Forces in France in 1919. McCaskie (September 5, 1884-May 19, 1959) was the daughter of preacher George Taylor "Gordy" McCaskie and Sarah A.Osbourne. In 1895 & 1900, she was living in Millburn with her parents at the house of her grandmother (Frances E. Osborne). By 1914, she had moved to 10 Chestnut Street in East Orange. She was issued her first passport in 1919, at which time she was occupied as a teacher. She traveled from Liverpool to Brest on February 18, 1919 as part of the YMCA Canteen and returned to Hoboken from Brest on August 10, 1919. The letter is dated April 13 and discusses her experiences in France, attendance at the local French Protestant Church and a visit from General Pershing, whom she did not get to see. Envelope is missing and there is no indication to whom she is writing.
