Burt Pool Ball Factory, c. 1900Description
Located where South Mountain School is today. The Burt Billiard Ball Company was the largest Pool Ball Works in America at the time. Site was near where South Mountain School is today. An announcement appeared in the Industrial Chronology of New Jersey, for the 8 months ending September 1902, that "the Burt Manufacturing Company, makers of celluloid novelties at Millburn, have decided to remove their plant to Bridgeport, Connecticut. The loss of this industry is much regretted in Millburn." Details of the move to Connecticut (Stamford) were announced in the June 26, 1902 edition of the Newark Evening News.
George H. Burt, b. November 1863, died before 1920 census. Married Ella Marie (b. 1864), c. 1888. Father was an ivory turner. Traveled to England in October 1900.
George Burt was also a British record company executive, one of the founders of Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Co. (1901). American born, he had a firm (George Burt Co., of Milburn, New Jersey) that made discs for Berliner and Zonophone. Burt set up the Globe Record Co. in 1901. He had supplied Berliner with “a mix for his records” in both the U.S. and at Deutsche Grammophon. In 1903 he was a director of Nicole Record Co., Ltd. (Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound).Collection
