Photograph of Gertrude Riner Taylor (1879-1959), second wife of John Taylor. Undated. Gertrude Riner was born in November 1879. On October 29, 1900, she married John Taylor, president and founder of the John Taylor Dry Goods company in Kansas City. The couple moved east in 1902, settling first in New York and then moving into a stately house on Old Short Hills Road by 1910. In 1918, the Taylors gave the house at 12 Taylor Street, now known as the Neighborhood House, to the Neighborhood Association of Millburn Township, a group founded by Joanna Hartshorn, Stewart Hartshorn's wife, to help the needy. In 1923, four years after her husband's death, Mrs. Taylor purchased the land for Taylor Park from Elizabeth Whittingham and gave it to the Township as a gift in memory of her husband, who died in 1919. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1924.
After John Taylor's death, Gertrude Taylor lived in Spring Lake, but returned to Millburn periodically. She later moved to Illinois, where she died in 1959.Acquisition
