Scope and Content

Born March 21, 1902 and moved to Millburn from Leeds England in December of that year. His father owned a dry goods store on Main Street. At that time, Millburn was a town of 600-800 people. Describes the Fandango Paper Mill, which manufactured paper board or library board. The Diamond Paper Mill manufactured a different kind of paper. Describes the start of the Morris County Transit Company with the Trolley Line and picnics in Heidelberg Park (corner of Millburn Avenue & Valley Street). Discusses the railroad stations and a bad accident involving the Wyoming railroad station. Other topics: Whittingham Estate, the Dalton family, the hat factory on the corner of Spring & Church Streets, the Mountain House (rooming home for immigrant workers), Prospero Marcantonios, Baltasrol Golf Club, the development of the Millburn town center in the 1930s (McCullums grocery, Mundy's store, Gwanlock's boarding house & livery stable, Jake Wachter's butcher shop, Hado's tailor shop, Schultz's candy store, Harth Greenhouses, Burd's shoe store, Albanese Candy Store, Stuart Livingston's barber shop), July 4th celebrations, the bicycle races, Dr. English's house, Guy Boswell (pharmacist for whom the American Legion Post was named), the Condits, Polansky's Livery Stable, Linds's Grocery Store, Jack Schmidt and his sons Frank and Nick, who built roads and whose horses pulled the fire wagon. Rimback's storage company. Silverstein's father was active in the Synagogue and discusses the Jewish community in Millburn in the teens and 1920s.
