Description

Six-page, paper, advertising calendar from the Stewart Hartshorn Company ("Manufacturers of Wood and Tin Shade Rollers"). Each page gas two months' of small calendars and Gibson-Girl style artwork on each page, by artist James Francis Day. Hartshorn used advertising astutely, often commissioning leading artists for his advertising and catalogs. In this case, he chose renowned artist James Francis Day (known as Francis Day) to illustrate his catalog. Born in LeRoy N.Y. on August 12, 1863, Francis Day was part of the generation of artists who studied at the Art Students League in New York and then traveled to Paris to continue his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Ernest Herbert and Luc-Oliver Merson. Day became a member of the Salmagundi Club, N.Y. in 1888, a member of the Society of American Artists, N.Y. in 1891 and was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design, N.Y. in 1906 (the year that The Light of Love was exhibited). Throughout his life, he exhibited some 50 works at the National Academy from 1888 - 1940 and won the third Hallgarten Prize in 1895 for his work entitled Patience. He was also an illustrator for The Century Magazine. In July of 1887 Day married Mary Evelyn Smith and moved to New York City. They moved to Nutley, NJ in 1890 and remained until the early 1900's. By 1905 they returned to NYC and in c.1912, Day moved to Massachusetts. The pages are tied at the top with a pink ribbon. Corners of the pages are bumped and ends are lightly worn and yellowed. The top page (January and December) are lightly soiled.
