Male & Female Workers Pose Outside The Burt Company Factory. The Burt Billiard Ball Company was the largest Pool Ball Works in America at the time. Site was near where South Mountain School is today. George H. Burt, b. November 1863, died before 1920 census. Married Ella Marie (b. 1864), c. 1888. Father was an ivory turner. George Burt founded the concern in c. 1891, establishing the Burt Manufacturing Company in 1898. The company was reorganized in 1900 and Burt moved to England in October 1900 to pursue similar interests.
George Burt went on to become a British record company executive, one of the founders of Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Co. (1901). American born, he had a firm (George Burt Co., of Milburn, New Jersey) that made discs for Berliner and Zonophone. Burt set up the Globe Record Co. in 1901. He had supplied Berliner with “a mix for his records” in both the U.S. and at Deutsche Grammophon. In 1903 he was a director of Nicole Record Co., Ltd. (Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound).Collection
