William Root Bliss-(November 4, 1825-1906) lived at Greystone Cottage (177 Hobart Avenue) and was one of the early residents of Short Hills Park. He served as secretary of the Short Hills Club and was active in the Short Hills Community. Son of Jeannette Root Bliss and Reverend Seth Bliss, William Root Bliss worked for Equitable Life Assurance Society for nearly 30 years.
Bliss wrote books on the Colonial history of Eastern Massachusetts (Side Glimpses From a Colonial Meeting House, Colonial Times on Buzzards Bay, Old Colony Town, Quaint Nantucket) and was a contributor to “The New York Observer” and “The Boston Transcript.”
References to his residence at Greystone are in 1888 issues of "The News Item" (Short Hills).In the 1890 Directory listed his Business Name as Greystone. Address was Hobart Avenue c. Knollwood Road. In 1905 , Bliss was listed at living at dwelling number 574 in Millburn, NJ.
